A karana is half a tithi — the time the Moon takes to gain 6° on the Sun. There are eleven karanas: seven movable ones that repeat through the month and four fixed ones.
Karana refines the tithi when picking a time. Vishti (also called Bhadra) is the one to avoid for anything auspicious; Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara and Vanija are generally workable.
